Parrots with great vocabulary

The Rose-Ringed Parakeet, or Indian Ringneck, is classified as a parakeet. These birds have hooked beaks, long tails, and are moderately small. These characteristics classify them as parakeets; however, they are true parrots. These parrots are about 16 inches in length and they have a look that gives them a stealthy appearance. Wild Ringnecks are green and tints of aqua can be seen during overcast days. These parrots have yellow that underlines their wing and tail feathers. Both males and females look very similar; however, the male has a black ring around his neck. His ring is highlighted with turquoise, pink, and blue.

Parrots range in size from 8-10 cm to 1 meter in length. The smallest is probably the Buff-faced Pygmy Parrot from Papua New Guinea. The largest is the Hyacinth Macaw from S. America. Parrots are distinctive in that the upper mandible of their bill is hinged at the joining to the skull. The arrangement whereby the lower jaw mandible fits up under the top one is also distinctive. This, and in most species a thick muscular tongue allow parrots to manipulate food items easily in their mouths. Most parrots are forest birds living in small groups or as individual pairs or families.

Most parrots are monogamous, form strong pair bonds which in some cases last for life which can be a considerable number of years, especially in larger species. Parrots lay 2 or 3 eggs in most cases, though up to 5 may be laid in some cases. Like all hole nesting species, the eggs are white and almost spherical. The young are hatch with few or no feathers and are totally dependent on their parents for food and protection for some weeks before they can leave the nest. In many species the young are fed by the adults for some time even after leaving the nest. Rose ringed parakeets are intelligent parrots and are in demand for pets. They learn concepts quickly and love to show off. This parakeet is recognized as one of the 5 best talking Parrot speciesand can learn a vocabulary of up to 250 words. The speech clarity can be pretty amazing and they have a habit of practising until perfect and then shocking their owners with an accurately uttered word.

Yuwaraj Gurjar.
