Silverline : with false head

This is a very beautiful and colorful butterfly but tiny in size just less than 1 inch. Its wings are narrow, pointed and hind wings have a large loge with two long tails, the lower one is much bigger than the upper. The underside of the wings is a light yellow with bright orange, red bands. These bands are bordered with black outlines and the best part is the “silver line” on the orange bands. Their abdomen is bulky with light yellow color and with bright black ring bands.

This butterfly is particularly common in rainy season. These Sileverlines have fast and jerky flights. Though they prefer to sit on one place and it is very easy to photograph them if they are on flower for nectar sucking. But if they get startled and shoot in air, then it is very difficult to chase them as their fast flight and matching upper wing colors with the background. It is a nectar loving butterfly so often visits flowers with good nectar qualities. In such cases it is quite common to see these butterflies in groups.

Many butterflies from family Lycaenidae have an unusual association with ants. Ants are normally predators of butterfly caterpillars; however Lycaenids have evolved a range of mechanism to overcome this predation. These mechanisms either deter the ants, or attract then by the secretion of compounds that are so attractive to ants that they will protect the caterpillar instead. Associations between the ants and the Lycaenid caterpillar range from mutually beneficial relationships, where the ants get fed in return for feeding and / or protecting the caterpillar, to relationships where the caterpillar actually prey upon the ant’s larvae.

If we look closely to this butterfly then we can see that their tail part is acting like a “false head”. There are perfect eyes, mouthparts and even antennae. So most of the predators like birds and lizards attack on this “false head” and they get only little part of the hind wings. But still the butterfly is safe and till that time away from its predator.
